A rendezvous’ with Kabali at 12.00 night-Kabali a review and
more…….
It has been 3 days since the much awaited Rajnikanth film-Kabali
has been released, and there are mixed reviews all around . Some mouths spread
that the movie is a disaster and is beginning of the fall of the super star…while
some says,… see it again! What to believe in?...
As an ardent viewer of cinema in four languages (English,Malayalm,Tamil
and Hindi) for over 30 years and this being my first attempt to write a review this is what I feel…
First,… a standing
ovation to the legend….Rajnikanth, who carried all the film in his own
shoulders. It is indeed the screen presence and charisma of the man that makes
you view the film with awe !
This is not a typical Rajni film- with little logic and more fun you can go and view in a festive
mood. But, there are ample elements to satisfy the rajni fans. You can see him
laugh-‘his signature laugh’
(“bhayama?…!
Ha ! ha! Ha!”),cry,fight ,deliver
crispy dialogues but,…not as the old Rajni- who dances to the peppy tunes and
bashes up someone who ends up in an sparkling live electric line high above.
Kabali is about gang wars and family reunions , with the
super star playing out his exact age in his tailor made role. The film without
Rajni would have been just an ordinary gangster movie apart from the technical
brilliance.
Pa. Renjith , in his third movie (the earlier being
‘Attakathi’-in 2012 and ‘Madras’ in 2014) has experimented with the sub plots
of indentured labour migration of the tamil people to Malasia in the early
1900’s ,their woes and worries, and Kabaleeshwaran aka kabali (Rajnikath)
turning out as their messiah .The movie could have shown the plight of the laborers
a bit more effectively. The movie with a Running time of 152 minutes has some intense moments ....
Radhika Apte… wow! Her performance is a stunner! And
also are commendable ,the performances by john vijay ,Kishore, ‘Attakathi’
Dinesh and Dhansika. Another high light is Nasser in a cameo role.

Though the movie does not have a parallel comedy track as in old Rajni movies, ‘attakathi’ Dinesh as the jittery body guard of kabali, lightens your mind at times. But kalaiyarsan’s role is wasted…the charm he delivered in his earlier Pa.Ranjith film ‘Madras’ is purely unseen here. the Taiwanese actor Winston Chao as tony lee essays the role with gusto.

The movie is Produced by Kalaipuli S. Thanu - a producer who knows how to market -the right way.never before has any indian film seen such a pre-release fever ,Cinematography is by G. Murali -excellent ,Editing by Praveen
K.L which is crisp , and the perfect back ground score and Music by Santhosh
Narayanan . the ‘vaanam paarthein’ song is fantastic and moody which almost takes you back to maestro Ilayaraja’s era.
Critical reception and ratings (from wiki)
IndiaGlitz.com rated the film 3 out of 5 and called it
"A very different Rajinikanth Experience".

film 2.75 out of 5 and stated that ''Rajinikanth in a different dimension, but
Kabali might not work for everyone''.
The Indian express rated the movie
3.5 out of 5 and said that,''Rajinikanth's film lacks pace and mass''
Hannah Ellis-Petersen, The Guardian’s culture reporter, filed a story, “Latest film from superstar actor Rajinikanth sends India into a frenzy”.
The Washington Post carried a story: “India’s biggest action-movie star isn’t just an actor. ‘He is god.’” It followed it up with a report, “Premiere of Rajinikanth film creates holiday mood in India.”
The news about Kabali was one of the biggest entertainment news in most of the South-East Asian countries and in Anglophone countries in Africa.
Watching kabala in aries plex SL cinemas,Trivandrum was
indeed and experience. (being the largest screen in south india) .we could get
the tickets at an odd show time, which
was 12.00 night.
But,even in those wee hours, the crowd was with family and children-cheering the star and posing to take a selfie with Rajni cut-outs displayed in the theatre!Waiting to see it once more……
